The Department of Oncology is responsible for the non-surgical treatment modalities of adult patients with solid tumours according to international accepted guidelines and standards. The department is one out of five oncological expert centres in Denmark. The Department of Oncology takes care of the following solid tumour types:
- Breast cancer
- Lung cancer
- Head and neck tumours
- Gastrointestinal (GI) tumours, both upper and lower GI-tumours
- Gynaecological tumours
- Urological tumours including testicular cancer Head and neck tumours
- Rare tumours including adrenocortical carcinoma and thymoma/thymic carcinoma
- CNS tumours
The treatment modalities include all non-surgical oncological modalities focusing on cancer chemotherapy, biologically targeted drugs, and radiotherapy.
Maja V. Maraldo, MD, PhD
is a clinical oncologist at the Department of Oncology, Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, where she is site group lead for radiotherapy of breast cancer and of pediatric cancer. Her research is focused on late effects of treatment, specifically cardiotoxicity, and how they relate to optimally manage contemporary patients in a mixture of clinical studies and applied epidemiological research, using AI for model-based prognostication.
She is a member of the ESTRO Guidelines Committee Sub-Group on Breast Cancer, secretary for the Danish Breast Cancer Group Radiotherapy Committee, board member of the Danish Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, and she has served on the Danish Medicine Council – Breast Cancer scientific committee.

Frederik Voigt Carstensen, MD
is a future PhD student. He is currently a resident in clinical oncology at the Department of Oncology, Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
