The Champalimaud Foundation is a biomedical research foundation, considered as a private corporate body of public interest; it carries out research in cutting-edge fields and strives to stimulate discoveries and to promote new standards of knowledge. It is at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, in Lisbon, that the Foundation develops its activity in the areas of neuroscience, blindness and cancer. This is done through both research programs and the provision of clinical services. To pursue its objectives in achieving significant scientific advances, the Champalimaud Foundation adopts a translational methodology, which establishes a direct link and interdependency between basic research and clinical activity. This is a fundamental part of the Foundation’s methodology. Ultimately, the Champalimaud Foundation aims to promote the health and well-being of humankind by seeking to actively participate in the search for solutions that can alleviate the burden of disease on societies and individuals. The Champalimaud Clinical Centre (CCC) is a state-of-the-art medical, scientific and technological institution. In this center, interdisciplinary clinical care is developed alongside applied research activities and advanced medical and technical education programs. There are seven functioning units dedicated to treatment and research on the major types of cancer. These are the Breast Unit, the Lung Unit, the Urology Unit, the Digestive Unit, the Gynecology Unit, the Haemato-Oncology Unit, and the Dermatology Unit. The Champalimaud Breast Unit was launched in 2011 under the Direction of Dr. Fatima Cardoso and is now working at full speed, managing around 1000 new breast cancer patients a year. From January to December 2022, the 11th full year of clinical activity, the Breast Unit treated 4320 patients, of which 1017 (24%) were new patients, seen for the 1st time in the Breast Unit, all stages included.
Eva Batista
is senior Breast Radiologist Radiologist at the Breast Unit, of the Champalimaud Foundation, with more than 10 years of experience in Breast Cancer imaging and it´s multidisciplinary approach
Eva has a special interest in epidemiology and clinical research, having taken the Methods in Clinical Cancer Research program (European School of Medical Oncology), followed by the Principles and Practice in Clinical Research course (Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health)
In parallel and related to her experience with foreign fellows and residents that frequently join the Breast Unit, Eva developed an interest in better understand the neural basis of the leaning process, and how to optimize teaching methodologies, having done the Teaching, Learning and Innovation Program, from the Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health.
Javier Morales Hernandez
is a Breast radiation oncologist, startedmedicine studies at the Medical school in the Universidad de La Sabana (Bogota, Colombia), during his undergraduate program did a specialized program at health management in the same university. In 2009, moved to Spain to specialize
in Radiation oncology at the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona. During his residential program, got a special interest in breast cancer, working with differents irradiations approaches such as partial breast irradiation, hypofractionated schemes, accelerated breast irradiation, intraoperative radiotherapy and breast brachytherapy at the Catalan oncology institute (ICO).
Joined the Champalimaud Foundation Radiation oncology Department in 2014, as a breast cancer fellow, with particular interest on hypofractionated schemes in the adjuvant settings and also a devote interest on the locoregional setting; in 2015, also performed a digestive cancer fellowship, taking part into the
surgical deferral program for rectal cancer and the RECTBALL study. Nowadays, became an active member of the breast unit at the same institution.
